Match Report

Old Foes Purley were welcomed to Pound Lane on Saturday to be greeted by fantastic weather and a wicket that looked pretty hard but a touch green due to the heavy rain earlier in the week. On winning the toss, skipper Gary Philips had no hesitation inserting Purley, to try to make the most of the moisture left in the wicket.

Purley openers Allen and Schofield looked relatively comfortable to start with until Schofield was very unlucky to deflect the ball from Gannon from thigh pad to stumps, just hard enough to dislodge a bail. 4 more quick wickets for Gannon, including two clean bowled in 2 balls (golden duck for Maycock!) put Sonning well on top before he had to come off after his permitted 7 overs. Sonning stayed well on top and having Purley at 120 for 8, despite Skipper Phillips dropping the simplest chance he'll get all year off George Troughton, looked as if a very low score was on the cards. However a spirited 9th wicket stand of 50 odd meant that they eventually reached 170 with Gannon returning very impressive figures of 7 for 33 of 14 overs.

After several low scoring games in recent years against Purley, it was imperative that Sonning got off to a good start, and this was definitely the case. Caleb Maycock is a very good bowler, who cannot be allowed to dominate, and Skipper Philips went about ensuring this was not the case. Pulling and driving with ease, he knocked Maycock off his length and Mark “I take the strike Richards was heard to say “I will nudge a single to give you the strike for the first time in his life! Philips eventually miscued one, bringing in the classy Ian Boyton. After a cautious start, he joined the now rampant Richards (he may have learnt how to play himself in!) and the two despatched the bowling to all parts in their different ways. The game was up after 32.1 overs with Boyton finishing on 66 and Richards on 78 for a very convincing victory.

This was a very enjoyable game played in a really good spirit and Sonning were delighted to beat their old rivals so comfortably.
