Sonning power home….
Set 167 our batters cruised us to a win in just 29 overs with Naqash top scoring with 79 ably supported by Ali 45 not out seeing us home with Dave Allen 20 not out and a win by 8 wickets.
We welcomed two new players this week, Jack Hudson and Youssef Iqbal with Freddie Travers playing his first game of the season following knee surgery.
Warfield are a depleted side having lost a number of their players in the close season and it was a mystery how they managed to score 166 runs though a quick look at the scorebook reveals that wides were the top scorer with extras totally 45. Yet again our bowlers were wayward with the exception of Naqash and Pieter. More net practice please!
After an early breakthrough with Waqas bowling their number 2 bat their innings was largely built on a second wicket stand of 85. Thereafter wickets fell at regular intervals. Jack Hudson bowled an excellent 7 over spell, keeping the ball up to the bat and taking one for 28 but deserved more. Youssef, a spin bowler, bowled some useful deliveries but needs more practice having not played cricket for a couple of years. Generally the fielding was sound with Dave, Jack, Pieter and Waqas saving runs in the field but the champagne moment was Ali catching their number 7 bat off the bowling of Pieter. Changing direction at the last moment, Ali managed to pouch the ball in his right hand, at full stretch just inches from the ground. Banjo weighed in with 2 wickets taking one with his first delivery.
After tea, Ali and Naqash started watchfully but were soon in full stride putting on a first wicket stand of 127. Ali was joined by Freddie who having crashed a four through the off side, top edged a full toss to the keeper. Ali was then joined by Dave who was in no mood to hang, hitting three fours and a six.
