Wednesday 30th June saw the Club lock horns in the biennial fixture with the Marylebone Cricket Club, playing for the David Phillips Memorial Trophy.
The clubhouse and ‘al fresco’ dining area were resplendent in their appearance, the pitch was picture perfect and the match played in the best spirit. For the first time in six matches the game saw a draw, leaving Sonning remaining 3 – 2 up in the series to date.
The catering of Adrian Cappello saw a feast for players and spectators alike, and this was combined with a sumptuous choice of wines and port which was heartily consumed.
The Club thanked Mike King of MCC for bringing a strong and very sociable team.
Other grateful thanks are also sent to:
Liz and James Travers for the decorations, including some delightful flowers, and for a wonderful array of homemade cakes
Stirk Pownall, James Travers, Alexander Fleming and the Hibberdine family for producing an incredible pitch and developing a beautiful pavilion.
The players for showing great skills and fortitude in producing a great contest to the end
Annmarie Sailsman for remaining resilient as the hectic day presented itself, and keeping the bar in order, also to Sharon Fleming who provided those pre-match pastries and worked tirelessly to aid the smooth running of the day
To our President: Peter Kay, and our Chairman: Gary Phillips who personally sponsored the catering and wines
A date for the diary: 29th August, President’s day when hopefully the weather Gods will shine upon us once more and we can see a similar and most successful day.
