Match Report

Sonning welcomed Kew looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season. Returning skipper Gary Phillips inserted the opposition on winning the toss, and despite a slightly lightweight bowling attack all seemed rosy as Kew lost regular wickets. Unfortunately the lack of mobility in the Sonning fielding was shown up, and with Duncan Parr getting injured, Kew were allowed to get a few more runs than they should have on a wicket offering plenty of turn, ending with 224 for 6 from their 52 overs.

Kew employed the same tactic as a number of teams recently, by opening the bowling with spinners using the old ball. This did not seem to affect the prolific Cornish Leftie, but wickets did fall at the other end. Philips, Stevens and Johnston all fell cheaply to put Sonning in real trouble. When Richards was out for an excellent 73 defeat looked imminent. Andy Sumner batted well before being carelessly run out, and the usually reliable Harris, who was nursing an injury was one of 5 LBW’s in the innings soon after. Peter Whitmore showed a welcome return to form, but nobody could stay at the crease with him and Sonning were dismissed for a very disappointing 162.

Sonning had not lost a league game since August 4th 2007 and will need to bounce back in style from this poor performance. They will need to have more energy in the field, bowl tighter and bat more sensibly, or they will be on the end of another loss. There are enough good players in this team to achieve this, and they must all step up to the plate and perform as well as they can. If they do this, promotion should still be very possible.
