Match Report

Weather almost ruined the game as the early morning shower threatened to spoil the game. But as it was the weather gradually improved and we ended up playing on a lovely and hot summer’s evening.

A really humid day on Sulhamstead saw the Sonning 4th emerge with their second win of the season. Sonning won the toss and sent the opposition in to take advantage of the damp pitch. Aamir took the new ball and immediately started to probe the corridor of uncertainty, and in tandem with JK set the tone with a very tidy opening spell. The first wicket fell with JK finding way through the defences of the opening batsmen with a lovely inswinger to their left hand opener, and Aamir took out their best batsmen whose previous three scores read 115*,160* and 158*. Sonning were in ascendency after taking the big wicket and kept the pressure on with tight and disciplined bowling. JK and Aamir were unlucky not to take more wickets as a lot of deliveries kept missing the edges. They still managed to take 3 more wickets together. At the end of their spells the home side were in trouble at 30 for 5 after 20 overs.

Captain Waqas brought himself on with Amer from the other end and both kept the pressure on by bowling tightly and miserly. Their spells together brought 2 more wickets in 10 overs for only 27 runs. Sulhamstead tried to make a late charge but Alex Ray finished the inngs in quick time by taking 3 wickets in only 3 overs. Sulhamstead finished on 82 all out in 37 overs. Special mention to Nick Ray for taking 3 catches behind stumps and keeping things very tidy – not conceding any byes.

Much like the home side we started our innings poorly. Steve, Alex and Keith were all back in the hutch before the score reached 15 and soon we lost James Mollard as well when the score was only 25. Captain Waqas with Jegan came together and therefore set about repairing the inning, all the while scoring at brisk pace. They counter attacked and race toward 50 in quick time. When it looked like the match is heading towards an easy finish Waqas edged one behind the keeper with 20 runs still to get. JK struck couple of healthy blows before getting out. It was left to Jegan who batted very responsibly and Nick Ray to guide the side home with 4 wickets to spare.

Overall, it was an excellent win against the top ranked side in the league. Our bowling and fielding were top class but we still need to improve in our batting department.
