Sonning 1st XI continued their dominant start to the season with another emphatic display that completed victory against neighbours Caversham and Redingensians by 3.40 in less than 26 overs of cricket.
Similar to last week, skipper Gary Philips inserted the opposition due to a wicket which was hard to define from the outfield and which home players admitted to not having been rolled due to the wet weather. Again this decision kept Sonning in control of the game, but meant that plenty of the team did not get a chance to perform as the home side were unable to cope with the Sonning bowling. Again Cameron Gannon was in blistering form, reducing his speed slightly this week to concentrate on swinging the ball like a boomerang, and clean bowled 5 batsmen for only 26 runs. If George Troughton had not spilt a really tricky chance his figures may have been even better. This week Ghulam Abbas was back in wicket taking form taking 5 for 22 including two return catches (much to his team-mates surprise!), and Cav. & Reds had been bowled out for 57.
Andy “Stumpy Sumner was given a chance to open the batting as he had not batted all season, and he showed the strength in depth of the Sonning batting line up by scoring a classy 23 while Mark Richards continued his destructive form to finish on 35 not out as the runs were knocked off in only 7 overs.
Again the Sonning players were left twiddling their thumbs after finishing just a couple of minutes later than last week. It really is not much fun winning this easily but it did give the players a chance to watch a good performance by the second team and see just how much strength there is in the club at the moment. Hopefully Yateley will give us a better game next week.
