Match Report

Maycock’s magic can’t stop Sonning

CALEB MAYCOCK’S hat-trick couldn’t halt Sonning’s charge towards their third Premier Division title in four years.

Purley paceman Maycock produced an inspired display, taking seven wickets as Sonning were shot out for 129.

But Sonning’s bowlers also took advantage of the two-paced pitch and, after reducing Purley to 36-6, finally dismissed them for just 84.

The win keeps defending champions Sonning hot on the heels on long-time leaders Yateley – and the sides meet in the crunch game of the season on Saturday.

Sonning skipper Gary Phillips said: “I thought we were about 20 or 30 runs short on that pitch, but we got a few early wickets and were able to put the pressure on them.

Only a solid 58 from Mark Richards and 24 from JJ Harris held up Purley.

Nick Holman bowled superbly early on, taking 1-2 from his first six overs before finishing with 3-18.

But it was Maycock who tore the heart out of the innings, bowling Harris and trapping Ghulam Abbas lbw before bowling Wazir Khan to complete his hat-trick.

Two overs later he took two more wickets in successive deliveries, but this time missed out on his treble.

Sonning’s Nisar Ahmed (3-18) and Richards (2-19) took the old ball and reduced Purley to 19-2 at tea.

Purley then slumped further and it needed a defiant 42 from Patrick Allen to hold up Sonning.

The introduction of Abbas ended Purley’s resistance as he took 3-27, including the wicket of Allen, who was last man out.
