Sonning were looking forward to welcoming Yateley to Pound lane hoping to reverse the 2 defeats to them last season. The two sides have changed greatly in the mean time, with Sonning being greatly strengthened, while Yateley have lost a lot of players. This showed in the result, but Sonning did have a serious wobble after Gary Philips decided to bat on winning the toss.
Mark Richards has been in great form recently, but the 2 under 15 Yateley openers James and Bartlett bowled very well at him and he soon nicked one behind to depart for 9. Ian Boyton followed soon after with an LBW some were not convinced about, and when Aussie star Gannon and 2006 Berkshire Premier League Batsman of the year JJ Harris both also followed to poor shots, Sonning were in trouble at 75 for 4. However this Sonning team bat a long way down, and while Skipper Philips was batting well at one end, Aussie Scott Stevens came in and started blasting the ball to all parts. On Philips departure, keeper Andy Sumner came in to form a heavyweight partnership with Stevens that took the game away from Yateley. The Aggressive Aussie was eventually out to another big shot for 60, but the arrival at the crease of Duncan Parr did nothing to brighten the day for Yateley. He batted very well for 38 but did somewhat worry Sumner with his love of the quick single! Sumner was eventually out for 39 and some late hitting by Abbas meant that Sonning could declare on 252 for 8 after 49 overs.
The Yateley innings started perfectly for Sonning with Abbas bowling dangerman Ben Viner with the first ball and another couple of quick wickets to him and Gannon made it look like the game would be over quickly. However Abbas picked up an injury after 4 overs, and with Gannon only able to bowl 7 over spells, and George Troughton bolstering the second team bowling attack, the attack looked a bit lightweight with Mark Richards the third seamer again conning a batsman to get out to him by smashing a full toss straight at cover. Duncan Parr bowled really well taking 3 for 20 including a juggling slip catch from Scott Stevens, who had earlier dropped one off Richards at the 5th attempt!
When Gannon came back for his second spell he quickly mopped up the tail to bowl Yateley out for 105 in 34 overs and finish with 4 for 21.
Batting first gave a much more pleasurable day for the team, and it was really pleasing that different players such as Stevens and Sumner made such an important contribution, while man of the match Duncan Parr put in a great all round performance. Roll on Chesham next week to see if we can complete the first half of the season winning all our league games.
