Arriving at the ground for the much anticipated game against one of the league's promotion favourites, the skipper had an early dilemma as Stirk informed him that a mysterious wet patch had seeped under the covers on to the planned playing surface and that it may be worth considering shifting the game over a few strips to one that had been prepared in the morning that looked a bit greener but looked decent. The decision to shift over to the new strip was made and the choice was justified as Sonning 2s performed fantastically well with bat and ball.
Having won the toss Burnham 3s stand in skipper elected to field. Debutante Freddie Travers strode to the crease and a controlled century opening partnership followed before Jason Dance fell for 46. The runs continued to flow as a cool and controlled Harvey Grout caressed the ball to all areas ably supported by Freddie and Kevan Smith who eventually fell for 60 and 55 respectively. The run rate was healthy but there was never any doubt of a declaration as Burnham had chased over 170 the previous week at seven an over. The Sonning innings closed after 52 overs on 303 for 3 shortly after Harvey completed his well deserved century.
Sonning chose to start bowling proceedings with the old ball and it wasn't long before Nigel Jackson removed a competent opener with an absolute snorter quickly followed by the number 3 as Mark Anderson's variation ball was lifted into the grateful hands of Matt Hill at extra cover. Wickets flowed as Burnham struggled to come to terms with the Sonning bowlers perseverance with Jason taking 4 and Kevan chipping in with a couple. Victory looked to be on the horizon but then an hour passed as Burnham's 9 and 10 dug in. What then followed was one of the most amazing dismissals seen in recent years. A bottom edge sent the ball towards the sight screen at the top end of ground and Trout trundled after it knowing that runs didn't matter at this stage. Assuming that the ball has crossed the boundary line both Burnham batsmen were stranded chatting at one end and a run out ensued as Trout launched it to the bowler's end where a grateful Jason removed the leg stump bail. Fourth change bowler Harvey eventually wrapped up the innings on 172 with his perseverance to try and bowl one straight resulted in a caught and bowled.
A great performance and deserved victory for Sonning 2s and special thanks to JJ for umpiring and Stirk for preparing a cracker of a playing surface.
