Having lost the toss, being put into the field was a pleasant surprise being that we fancied the look of our bowling attack whilst the batting looked slightly weak. Availabilities earlier in the week had been as issue for concern however with the presence of George Wilton and the family duo of Keith and Alex Denyer this was a thing of the past come Sunday afternoon!
There were a number of highlights in the field on the day. Adeel and Batista opened the bowling down and up the hill, the first break through came early on with Adeel taking Phoenix's opener Holister for only 6, which was followed by a further two wicket taking out Phoenix's 3rd and 4th batsmen for 11 between them.
Batista took perhaps one of the most important wickets of the day, getting the Phoenix number 1 bat Varley for only 18 thanks to a comfortable, never in doubt catch from Jacko. Shortly after this saw the first bowling change with Jacko bowling down the hill and Pownall (Ryan).
Now what you are about to read will surely never happen again! 15th over first ball Pownall wicket clean bowled, started outside of coming in nicely to take leg stump! Second ball to the new bat…clean bowled again by the shock of everyone in the King Georges field vicinity. Hatrick ball now to the new bat, no pressure! Pownall runs in, Yorke behind the stumps stood up, batsmen's gone forward to block it out…edge! Then to everyone's shock the ball stuck to the unsuspecting gloves of Yorke, for a careers first and more than likely only hatrick!
To end the Phoenix innings a final notable accomplishment was jacko's 3rd wicket. Most importantly the second, taking Raj for 26 whom was in no mood to leave the middle, however with a shot which on most days would have run for 4, Pownall (Ryan) had other ideas starting at mid off making quick ground diving to his left taking a memorable one handed catch whilst nearly horizontal coming back to earth with a thud and holding on.
With the Phoenix innings coming to a somewhat achievable 111, Sonning openers Thava and Richard Pownall went in the knowledge they had all day, and Richard made sure everyone knew he knew that too! Bu was unlucky to go out for 10 to Raj's quick bowling, followed by an unfortunate duck for Yorke clipping the bail on its way through.
In came Chaudrey with the determination to steal a compelling case for MoM from Ryan. This he did, scoring a solid 68 not out including nine 4's and three 6's! Alongside a solid yet fair to say slow inning from Richard making 18 not out from 32 overs in the middle.
Final result Sonning won by 8 wickets. Man of the match stolen by Adeel for 3 wickets and a solid innings.
