Match Report

Without our inspirational captain from 2009 due to work commitments, Thorpey arranged the troops to arrive in Prince Edward's front garden for a 1.00pm start only to find out it was actually 1.30pm due to a typo in the fixture card. Nobody moaned too much as the youngsters disappeared off to the local garage for sarnies and crisps whilst the rest of us tried to get the old limbs moving in the Surrey drizzle.

Winning the toss Thorpey elected to take the field and within an hour Harvey 'Growler' Grout had six vociferous lbw appeals turned down that 'were all taking out the middle of middle' with Hilly backing up the Growler's claim saying that 'one of them may have clipped leg stump but I'm not too sure'. Jacko made the break through as Matty dived forward to take a great catch at cover but wickets were hard to come by and the skipper resorted to experience with Anners and Beefy bowling the last 23 overs. The Bagshot batsmen found it tough to get the ball away, wickets fell at regular intervals and Bagshot finished on 150 for 8 after their 52 overs. It should have been less than that with the Bagshot skipper dropped early before going on to make 79. The Growler did plead to be brought back on when the 'umpire' came out to bat who had turned his appeals down earlier but their was no point in changing the old timers and in the interests of peace and quiet, it was probably the best decision the skipper made during the day.

Chasing 151 on a slow and low track, Jason Dance got us off to a good start with a classy 38 ably supported by 27 from the Growler and 21 from debutante Chris Priestley and the winning runs being scored with a classy cover drive by the skipper in the 35th over. Losing 6 wickets was a little disappointing with both Jason and Brooksy skying long hops to mid wicket, Beefy playing all round a straight one, and both the debutante and Fordy being bowled when the red mist appeared as the ball was pitched short and kept low knocking over middle. Inevitably, the Growler had to go LBW as Beefy raised the finger! Despite pleas that it was 'going over' the finger remained raised and a grumbling Growler trudged back to the pavilion.

All in all, a decent debut in Div 5 and great to get the season off to a winning start.
