After the previous weeks disappointing performance against Boyne Hill, Sonning welcomed league new boys Bagshot, hoping for a much improved display. The start was not as hoped for, as after winning the toss and inserting the visitors, opening bowler Abbas was found to be stuck in traffic. Things having started badly, they continued to get worse as having started slowly, Bagshot gradually upped the scoring rate to finish on 290 from their 52 overs. Stars of the innings were skipper Hollely who scored 100 and J Davis, who smashed 93 off only 64 balls. Sonning’s bowling was poor and fielding was woeful!
With such a big total to chase, Sonning needed a solid start. Although LJ Brown was at his fluent best, at the other end Skipper Philips and usually reliable Ian Boyton were both out cheaply. Duncan Parr joined Brown and an excellent 93 run partnership ensued. Unfortunately both were out in consecutive overs, and with JJ Harris and James Ford getting out cheaply, Sonning were in big trouble at 176 for 6. At this stage, one of the more remarkable innings seen at Sonning began. Big Scotty Stevens, who had been such an integral part of the club for a few years, both on the pitch and socially, was playing his last game before returning to Australia. He started to play as if he didn’t have a care in the world and smashed almost every ball he faced for 4 or 6. With James Reilly and then Abbas also batting well, Sonning came right back into the game, needing 14 off the final over. Unfortunately Stevens could not hit the ball like he had been, and ran a single off the penultimate ball, to leave him stranded on 99 not out at the non-strikers end. The game ended in a draw but Stevens amazing innings had come off only 45 balls with 15 fours and 5 sixes after he had not scored any runs from his first 10 balls faced – Incredible!
Sonning will need to tighten their bowling and fielding if they are to avoid a relegation fight, and will need to replace Stevens effectively.
