Match Report

Sonning arrived at the picturesque Bray cricket ground hoping for the excellent wicket other teams had told us about all year, but the recent very wet weather and a recently used pitch, meant this was not quite the case. Skipper Phillips lost the toss for the first team this season, and there was no real surprise that Sonning were asked to bat.

With the bounce proving on the low side of inconsistent and plenty of sideways movement, a steady start was required. Unfortunately this did not happen, with stroke makers Richards, Stevens and Gannon all falling cheaply to leave Sonning in trouble at 40 for 3. However Skipper Phillips was playing in determined fashion and the arrival of Vice Captain Harris started the fight back. The slow outfield meant boundaries were a rarity but the pair batted well to take the score to 118 before Harris was well caught for 41. “Stumpy Sumner came to the wicket and started biffing the ball to all parts before being unluckily stumped off the keepers pads. This brought “whippet Duncan Parr to the crease, and he timed the ball supremely from ball one. A fantastic partnership ensued with Philips, with runs being taken everywhere and Parr running the legs off his by now tiring captain. They took the score to 258 for 5 at the end of the 52 overs with Phillips carrying his bat for 79 with only 2 boundaries (the outfield was very slow and large!) and Parr making 59.

The Bray innings started with some ease on a wicket that was difficult to both take wickets and score runs on. Cameron Gannon was unfortunate and could not locate the timbers, taking one wicket in the innings. Sonning were not at their best, with the bowlers a bit inconsistent and the fielding a bit laboured. Wickets fell slowly and a draw always looked on the cards until the final couple of overs, when Bray decided to push for their final batting point. First a silly run out, then two miss hits off Stevens bowling meant that their injured Captain had to come in to bat to face the last ball of the innings to save the game before heading back to hospital for the second time of the day.

It was disappointing to lose the 100% record for the league season with a slightly under par performance against competent opposition. Lets hope we gat back to winning ways next week with a better all round display.
