PAUL VINES fired Peppard back to the top of the Premier Division table with a crushing six-wicket win over defending champions Sonning at Sonning Lane.
Peppard, playing in the top flight for the first time this season, survived an early mauling from Sonning opener Mark Richards as they ripped through the lower order to leave the home side 114 all out.
Then Vines and Ronnie Brock steered Peppard to a crucial win in the 33rd over.
A minute’s silence was held before the game in memory of former Sonning president Frank Orton, who died last week.
And Sonning started the game in dramatic fashion as Richards smashed 18 off Vines’ first over.
Sonning lost a couple of early wickets before Richards’ 34-ball innings of 51 came to an end when he was superbly caught by Brock off Vines.
And after that Sonning self-destructed as Roy Hayden tore into them to finish with 5-45.
Paul Vines hit back to take two wickets, while Tim Vines clean bowled three victims for 20 runs.
Peppard suffered an early blow when they lost Hugh Asquith to the pacy Ghulam Abbas.
But Brock and Paul Vines steadied the ship with an excellent partnership, taking the score on to 100-2.
Brock hit a patient 40, while Vines’ 46 came off 53 balls.
But it was left to Gerry Bacon and Trevor Blair to steer Peppard home.
