Match Report

Sonning welcomed old rivals Purley, looking to add to their unbeaten start to the season in a top versus bottom clash .Skipper Gary Phillips decided to field on winning the toss and got off to a great start. Wade Johnston and Ghulam Abbas bowled terrific spells and with the prolific Patrick Allen struggling to get the ball off the track, the pressure started to build as Purley were crawling at 2 an over for the first 10. As Purley started to try to open up, Aussie Johnston ripped out 3 quick wickets to put them in trouble at 50-3. A careless run out then brought Mark Nash and Kevin Denton together and whilst they never looked fluent, they batted very sensibly on the tricky wicket, putting the bad ball away to the boundary and keeping out the good balls. Eventually they reached 183-6 in their 52 overs, a target Sonning thought would be well within their reach. Johnston was the star of the bowling performance with 4 for 68 from 18 overs while Abbas went at 2 an over for his 16 and Richard Anderson rolled the years back with a good 8 over spell.

The Sonning innings started very well against the good opening attack of Caleb Maycock and Lance Harris. Phillips and Richards batted cautiously against fast bowling on the rapidly deteriorating wicket. With the ball starting to misbehave Richards was eventually out for 23 with the score on 65 and Sonning looked on their way. However careless shots then accounted for new boy Steve Mankee, Wade Johnston (first ball) , JJ Harris and skipper Phillips for a well made 56. With the excellent strength in depth Sonning possess, confidence was still there, but with a good catch accounting for Grandad Whitmore for 14, a dodgy decision removing “Stumpy Sumner for 20 and a rush of blood from Abbas getting him out for 18, it was left to the old heads of Richard Anderson and George Troughton to try to win the game. Unfortunately despite some good stroke play from Anderson and some big swipes from “Trout they finished 12 runs short when Anderson was bowled off the last ball to leave the score on 173-9. Nash finished with 4 wickets while Maycock took 3 and Andy Wheeler took 2.

After a good bowling performance this was a disappointing batting show from Sonning, and will have to improve greatly if they are to achieve their aim of another promotion. They will have to bat with more responsibility, especially in the middle order and make it harder for teams to take their wickets. However it must also be said that this wicket was not good enough for a game at this level, and hopefully they will not have to bat on one like this again
