Being confident that we had a strong all round squad and having won the toss Ryan put the lads into bat. In what felt like no time at all Phil and Bu (James Thava) had got of to a flying start after a long winters break. Phil knocked his first 50 of the season of only 29 balls with Bu not far behind going out on 36, making a first wicket partnership of 100, followed by Phil’s wicket an over later.
Problems began, though, with the Denham bowling partnership of O’Hara and Rai who brought the Sonning batting line up back down to earth. Fordy went in with no such luck to be replaced by Ryan to partner Rhys on his Sunday debut. Mr Yorke had a good quick nock making 26 of 26 balls before, to his displeasure, being bowled, attempting to dispatch Rai’s consistent bowling. Ryan shortly followed by attempting to recreate his career’s first 6 on the next ball, only to be clean bowled too by Rai! Fakhir Rashid, on his debut took it upon himself to mend the innings with a selection of 4’s and 6’s with the odd single. Sohail made a quick appearance knocking 14 of 4 balls and again like Ryan going out to Rai’s bowling when attempting to follow up a cracking 6 the ball before. Another Sunday debutant Ben Zagorski was unlucky to be stumped to the temptingly slow bowling of Bhatt. Thereafter the innings saw Fakhir come in with a solid 40, Nigel coming home with a duck (consisting of block, block, swing!) and Mr Batista being run out for 6 with Wildthing notching a solid 5 NOT OUT!
Following a tea consisting of some IPL and some amazing home made curry Sonning and their heavy bellies took to the field. The bowling attack got off to a good start with Sohail taking a cracking catch at slip off Nigel’s bowling. This brought in the again solid Rai who was determined to go down fighting. Some overs later and no luck from Batista’s consistency, the next breakthrough came with Denham’s opener on 47 attempting to knock Fordy out of the park being caught by Nigel out in the deep. This was followed by another quick wicket from Sohail who, immediately after, was forced to retire from bowling due to a groin injury. This loss was going to prove an issue with the entrance and rejoining of the earlier bowling partnership of O’Hara and Rai. With the overs slowly ticking over and the target ever nearing, no other choice was left to the skipper but to bring on his own dynamic bowling duo of Rashid and Yorke! Between them notching up 4 maidens and 3 wickets breaking up Rai (32) and O’Hara (57) who almost certainly would have run away with the show. With hearts comfortably back in chests this left Zagorski to catch and bowl his first Sonning wicket and Phil to wrap up the overs with a wicket of his own.
Final result a not so comfortable Sonning win by 63 runs.
