Sonning arrived at the picturesque Royal Ascot ground in the shadow of the racecourse grandstand keen to get the new season underway on a lovely sunny afternoon. Ascot, who play at the same level in the Thames Valley leagues as Sonning decided to have a bat first and were immediately under pressure from new overseas player Rhys 'Duke of' Yorke with his deadly left arm inswing and Adeel Chaudry. Yorke took an early wicket but some poor slip fielding from Sonning’s most experienced players let them get off the hook somewhat. However Ascot never really managed to press the accelerator against some tight spin bowling from Ian Boyton and Duncan Parr and some accurate 'pies' from Pasty! They finished on 196 for 7 from their 52 overs, a figure that looked within reach for a strong Sonning batting line up.
The Sonning reply started brightly with Mark Richards smashing 10 off the first over. However an excellent catch in the 3rd over to dismiss their Talisman and then the departure of Steve Mankee for 11 saw vice captain JJ Harris join Ian Boyton at the crease. Having been dropped first ball (a hat-trick delivery) and then struggling to keep out some testing away swing bowling, Harris decided that the best form of defence was attack. He started to bludgeon the ball over the top while Boyton caressed the ball with great timing and deceptive power including one glorious cover drive for 6. By the time Boyton was out for 23, Sonning were well on their way to victory, and after Harris holed out for 60, Yorke, James Moore, Chaudry and Parr all chipped in with useful runs to easily surpass the target with 10 overs remaining.
This was an excellent warm up game against good opposition and showed some promising signs for the season.
