Sonning “Not at the Races
It was an overcast day which matched the performance of the team for our debut fixture in Division 3 of the Berkshire League. Loosing the toss we were asked to bat first on a sticky wicket which was still drying out after overnight heavy rain.
Making their first Saturday league appearances for the club were Scott Stevens, [Australian] Retief DerWalt, Pieter Olberholzer [both South African] and Steve Simmons. With James Moore also playing his first game for the third eleven there was somewhat of an experimental feel to the team and that pretty much summarised our performance.
James and Ali Driver were made to work hard for every run against some accurate bowling with many deliveries moving appreciably off the damp surface. Their defiance was interspersed with some firm boundaries but runs were extremely difficult to find. Hitting him on the front pad James was adjudged lbw for 5 with the score at 23 after 15 overs. This brought Retief to the crease who immediately set about the bowling such that when he was out for 19, 4 overs later, the total had more than doubled to 54 for 2. Having struck a clean 6 over mid-on the next ball caught the outside edge of his bat through to the keeper. As if not to be outdone by his colonial colleague, Scott set about the bowling with an even greater sledgehammer approach blasting 27 of 14 deliveries. Likewise, he was in for 4 overs and to total had passed 100 for the loss of 4 wickets, Ali’s determined innings have concluded when the score was 65 for a gritty 18.
The tempo of the innings was now set with the remaining batsman getting a start then getting out, Naqash Tahir 13, Steve 11, Pieter and myself 14 such that we were dismissed in 41 overs for 154. The innings had contained seven 6’s which represented more than a third of the runs scored from the bat, thus the remaining 80 runs came from 240 deliveries!
Don Wilmott and Waqas Tahir opened the bowling. Don was steady but could not buy a wicket. Waqas though a bit wayward picked up two early wickets both caught by Scott. At 18 for 2 we were very much in the game but this brought to the crease their number 4 bat who made 97, again caught by Scott, off the bowling of Pieter, falling just short of taking his team across the winning line. Those runs were scored by their remaining opener who managed to accumulate 17 runs 32 overs.
