Match Report

Phillips piles on the agony with first league century

THE TOP of the Premier Division table already has a familiar look to it with former champions Sonning now leading the way.

They moved into pole position after a winning draw over Sand-hurst who had to cling on grimly at 134-9 chasing a daunting 263-4.

And it was Sonning skipper Gary Phillips who played the pivotal role for his side by scoring his first ever league century for the club with a superb unbeaten knock of 102.

He and the highly talented Latif Gohar (74no) paved the way for a 19 point haul as they put on a devastating stand of 178 in just 23 overs for the third wicket.

Earlier Mark Richards had rattled up 44 on a perfect day for batting at Pound Lane.

Ghulam Abbas then took three wickets but it was left arm spinner Richard Anderson who made early inroads into the Sandhurst batting after Sonning had chosen to open the bowling with the old ball.

Former Berkshire spinner Anderson bagged 3-4 from six overs at the start before Abbas did everything he could to tidy up the Sandhurst tail.

But number eight Nigel Birt and last man Simon Coxwell showed great courage to hold out for the last 15 overs.

Sandhurst skipper Chris Pharo conceded: "Sonning are like a juggernaut when they are in that sort of form. They are an immensely strong team and we did well to hold on.

"At one stage we had them rocking a bit at 80-4 but we dropped two crucial catches and you can't afford to make mistakes like that because they make you pay."

Phillips was dropped before he had troubled the scorer while Gohar was put down when in his 20's and both players went on hammer the ball to all parts of the ground in an awesome display of hitting.

Phillips said: "I enjoyed the knock immensely because in recent years I've not really got in that often with our top order batsman doing so well.

"I was seeing it like a football after the first few overs and it was good to get a great partnership going with Latif."

He added: "It's a shame we didn't quite manage to take the last wicket and at 70-6 we were hoping to roll them over but we dropped a couple of catches for the 10th wicket so we only had ourselves to blame."
