Match Report

Wheeler deals blow to struggling Sonning

JAMES WHEELER shone with bat and ball as Woodcote produced their best performance of their opening season in the Premier Division by defeating 2006 champions Sonning by three wickets.

Batting first Sonning’s poor form continued, coupled with the absence of key players as Wheeler ripped through the top order taking the wickets of Parr (14), Roberts (5) and Harris (6) cheaply before returning for a second spell to take three more to finish with impressive figures of 6-43.

Ably supported by opening bowler Paul Knox, who was almost unplayable in his opening spell when he bowled Mark Richards cheaply, Woodcote got on top before Pete Whitmore (60) and Matt Baglow (34) steadied the ship to steer Sonning to 210 all out, aided by 40 extras.

This was still a big target for the home side, but Wheeler and opening partner Jonny Clark (21) gave Woodcote a great start with a first-wicket partnership of 50.

Harvey Grout bowled Clark before trapping Knox lbw shortly afterwards, but this brought together Duncan Holder (30) and the prolific Wheeler, who added 119 runs for the fourth wicket.

With the job almost done, Wheeler passed 500 runs for the season before lifting the ball into the hands of Baglow off Parr just seven runs short of his century.

Woodcote survived a few anxious moments as Ghulam Abbas chipped in with three late wickets, but James Worsfold (15no) saw his side home with three wickets in hand and with four overs to spare.
