Match Report

With a bit of moisture in the track the skipper elected to field hoping to take advantage of the conditions but with the ball doing even more than expected from the seamers, the batsmen played and missed on several occasions and with the track drying, three out of the top four Slough 3 batsmen went on to score deserved half centuries. Gradually increasing the run rate throughout the innings, Slough 3rds finished on 248 for 6 with Jameel taking four of the six wickets to fall during the 52 overs.

Sticking with the youth policy of James Moore and Alex Wright to start the run chase, Alex fell early but the innings began to gain momentum with Scott Stevens and James getting the score to 84 before Scott was bowled for a self-confessed 'scratchy' innings of 40. With Chris Priestley and James Ford falling quickly, it was down to Jameel to pick up the pace as James remained unbeaten at the other end. After a quick fire 40 Jameel fell leg before and with Nigel Thorpe and Nigel Jackson being sent in to keep the momentum going, both fell soon after reaching double figures. With the game still in the balance and a run rate of just over seven required off the last four overs, Dave Rintoul and Mark Anderson fell cheaply leaving the reliable Steve Hill and James to bat out the last eight balls and hold on for the draw. Thanks to James for not risking his wicket when he only needed another five runs for a deserved century.

Eight points from a losing draw in a very tight game leaves Sonning 2s in fourth place with a remote chance of successive promotions, but remarkably just fifteen points off a relegation place in what has turned out to be a very tight league this season.
