Match Report

Sonning welcomed Barnes to a very wet Pound Lane hoping the rain would subside and a game would be possible. Fortunately it did and Skipper Philips was back to winning ways with the toss and decided to field.

This looked a good decision as the damp pitch was creating a lot of movement for the athletic opening pair of George Troughton and Cameron Gannon. The “Fish took 2 early wickets while Gannon also weighed in with 2 in his first spell. Sonning were not at their best in the field with 3 chances being spilled, but a pleasing feature was the attitude and speed shown in the outfield by youngsters Nigel Jackson, Dan Medhurst and Phil Collier. Between them they saved their older teammates a lot of running and a good few runs! Gradually wickets fell, with Gannon adding another 2, Anderson getting 2 including the dangerman and injured Abbas coming on to snaffle one. The reduced overs meant 1 over needed to be bowled by someone at the end of Gannon’s spell, and after talking his way into bowling it, Mark Richards somehow managed to get the batsman to spoon one in the air for Mark Anderson to take a fine running catch – How does Jethro manage to get a wicket every time he bowls with either a half volley, full toss or long hop??

Eventually Barnes were all out for 143 in 46.3 overs.

The Sonning reply started very positively against the slightly pedestrian Barnes opening attack, with Richards in very destructive form and Philips knocking the ball around nicely. When he was out for 17 Gannon came to the crease and started off playing sensibly. When Richards was eventually out for an excellent 80, Gannon started to hit his way to an early finish. While this resulted in 1 massive 6, it also resulted in his downfall, stumped and also the very quick departure of Pete Whitmore to an attempted 'Biff'. Abbas joined vice captain Harris who was nurdling to ball around and promptly ignored any advice by smashing a big six and trying to hit the cover off every ball, hurriedly bringing up the victory target in the 24th over.

A good all round performance without ever having to get into top gear. Roll on Purley next week when we will have to be at our best!
